MISS GAY JOZI
Now in its third year, Miss Gay Jozi is billed as ‘arguably the largest and most entertaining drag pageant in Johannesburg’, the pageant was held at The Wits Theatre in Braamfontein, Johannesburg.
It Celebrates both the art of drag and non-traditional gender identities. As well as the beauty contest, there were performances from a host of local drag superstars and friends.
The stage acts include the Blue Belles, Labelz D’ Glamour, Glamdiva, Ellah Divalicious, Anso Livingstone, Mr Carter, Blu, Rosslyn van der Woodsen Bass and Zsa-Zsa Whitney Gabor Houston.” It has allowed the people of these communities to be proud and open about who they are, and given them a place to compete in a pageant of sorts that may one day be on a par with Miss South Africa.“It is a means of expressing ourselves and our new-found freedom which is enshrined within the constitution, and celebrated in conjunction with Africa Day which falls on the 25 May,” said Miss Gay Jozi co-ordinator, Zsa-Zsa Whitney Gabor-Houston.
Ycer Mashimane who hails from Tzaneen, was crowned Miss Gay Jozi.
